The Department of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) continues to bring together its graduates—who have achieved international success in the industry—with students as part of the 2025–2026 Academic Year Fall Semester activities. The guest of this term’s “Student–Alumni Meeting” series was Ali Kara, M.Sc. in Civil Engineering, Design and Engineering Director of the Roads Projects Department at the Qatar Public Works Authority (Ashghal).
A Success Story Extending from the FIFA 2022 Projects to the OMU Campus
Ali Kara, who completed his undergraduate studies at the Department of Civil Engineering of our university, shared his more than 20 years of international experience, engineering vision, and career journey with future engineers.
Having played a leading role in the transformation of Qatar’s transportation infrastructure, Kara shared his critical experience in the design, tendering, and construction management processes of highway and bridge projects developed within the scope of the FIFA 2022 World Cup. Our guest—recipient of the “Engineer of the Year” award and a regular speaker at TRB conferences in Washington, D.C.—aimed to provide students with insight on the following topics: Engineering management in international mega projects; Design–Build models and risk management; Modular construction technologies and innovation; and engineering careers abroad and accreditation processes (ICE, CEng, Eur. Ing.).
